This week we are presenting our progress report to the class. Katie is continuing to finalize the Survey Monkey survey, Amie is finalizing the interview questions, and David is working on scheduling interviews.
Let’s try to have the Survey Monkey survey as well as the interview questions finalized by this weekend at the latest. We will plan on doing interviews next week.
I have an interview scheduled with a sustainability engineer who works for an architecture firm, Re-Vision Architecture, in PA. It should be good in that it will give us insight into the industry, but also allow us to better compare Cleveland to a more established sustainable city.

New items for Team Renewable Synergy to work on this week:
Katie will lead the effort to create a Survey Monkey questionairre for us to use to obtain feedback quickly and from a wide variety of individuals. (We will survey from our friends, family, co-workers, etc. to get a good sampling of data from the general population)
David and Amie will continue to identify and coordinate / schedule interviews with key stakeholders.
Amie will lead the effort to create a detailed interview guide for use with one-on-one interviews with key stakeholders who are active or have influence in the area of sustainability.
Debbie and T.J. will work together to gather information on metrics that are utilized to determine sustainability rankings of cities as well as how Cleveland ranks. (use Sustainable City Rankings link under ‘Useful Links’)

This past Wed. 10/7, T.J., Amie, and David met with one of the 28 initiative teams that was a result of the Sustainable Cleveland 2019 summit. One of the outcomes of the summit was the formationof these initiative teams. In addition to the formation of the initiative teams, a Steering Committee was created. The group that our Renewable Synergy team is working with is the ‘Communications Campaign and Branding’ initiative group.
Communications Campaign and Branding: (as described from the post summit report summary)
‘Build a solid communications plan with goals, phases and budget that will provide a common language, spread awareness, spur conversations about sustainability, help to market Cleveland as the grenn city on a blue lake both locally and nationally and create a positive reputation of a city that has turned itself around from the city where the river burned.’
The two people that our team will be corresponding with that are the leaders of this Initiative Group are the following:
- Gregg LaBar – Senior Vice President, Dix & Eaton. (glabar@dix-eaton.com)
- David Jurca – Urban Designer, Urban Design Center of Northeast Ohio. (djurca@kent.edu)
We need to ensure that we communicate with the above group members so that our work will not be repeated and any new information / updates can be shared immediately.
Areas where Team Renewable Synergy’s assistance would be beneficial:
(And questions that our team can help answer)
- How can we align all of the segmented groups within the Cleveland area that are separately working on sustainability? (i.e. Green Energy Ohio, E4S, Green Building Coalition, etc…)
- What moves the needle when it pertains to sustainability?
- What are the metrics that other cities utilize to determine their sustainability rankings?
- How does Cleveland compare to these cities?
People / Groups Team Renewable Synergy should contact for interviews
- Andrew Waterson – Chief of Sustainability, City of Cleveland
- Maureen Harper – City of Cleveland Communications
- Dave Nash – Member of the Steering Committee (I have his phone no. we are to tell him we were referred by Brian Blune)
- Someone from Green City Blue Lake (?)
